Hate Exercise? Try Playing WII Fit

I have to admit, I’ve never enjoyed exercise that seemed like exercise. Walking, yoga, and martial arts all worked for me. But now I no longer practice Aikido, and it’s been too hot to go walking.  I hate the idea of going to a gym. It’s just not my idea of fun.

I decided to try the WII fit. And it’s been a huge help on keeping me on track through the hot summer. If you already have a fitness regime, the WII fit may not challenge you. But if you are just starting out, it’s a great motivator.

So what is the WII fit? It’s actually two things, a game and a balance board/game controller that you stand on. You stand on the board to weight yourself at the beginning of each session. The board also monitors your balance through the different activities.

The first thing to be aware of is the WII fit is a little mean, and will call you at least overweight or obese when you weigh in. If you are above your target weight, try to let it slide. You are doing a great thing by starting to take care of yourself. Tell the little WII voice to stick it! You will also see your weight vary from day to day, it’s completely normal.

There are tons of games to play, and you will unlock new exercises as you put in a certain amount of time in. It’s a great reward! I would suggest starting with the step aerobics or hula hoop to begin with. The hula hoop gets your heart rate up more than you expect.

The aerobic step is also great way to move from the couch. Once you get used to the screen notation of how to place your feet, you are home free. And you will unlock an advanced level right when you start getting a little bored with the beginning one.

You can see a video on youtube that shows the screen for a few of the games. Just remember you are moving on the balance board to make your character move.
