Simple Homemade Facial Cleansers

lime_3My mom called this morning to tell me that she has so many limes from her lime trees she doesn’t know what to do with all of them. Just for kicks, she squeezed some juice from the limes and applied it to her face and saw immediate firming effects. So I decided to do a post on just that-homemade facial cleansers that don’t have to cost you a fortune. If you wouldn’t put it in your mouth, why would you put it on your skin?

Using homemade fruit acids can firm and soften your skin naturally. Simply take a lemon, lime or orange and squeeze enough juice to cover your entire face. You can add a little water or honey to the mixture if you like. Pat it gently on your face with your fingers or a soft sponge. Leave it on for about 10 minutes and rinse with warm water.

Here’s another easy alpha hydroxy acid mask you can make yourself:

INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup apple juice
1/4 cup grape juice
1/4 cup cane sugar

Blend all of the ingredients. Apply to your face with an organic cotton ball or sponge. Leave on for 10 minutes and rinse with warm water. The mixture will keep for up to four days in the refrigerator.

Another great cell renewal herbal cream recipe for sun or wind-damaged skin can be found in Annie B. Bond’s book, Better Basics for the Home:

Cell Renewal Comfrey Cream
2 ½ ounces oil infused with comfrey leaf and root
4 ounces comfrey water (make a very strong comfrey tea, let cool, strain out the comfrey)
1 ½ ounces coconut oil
2/3 ounce beeswax
Preservative (1/3 teaspoon grapefruit seed extract, found in health food stores)
10 to 25 drops essential oil, if desired.

To make an oil infusion, crumble 2 ounces of dried comfrey leaves and root into the bottom of a crock pot and cover with an oil such as olive. Place over low heat for 6 hours. Let cool. Strain out the plant matter.

Melt the beeswax with the oils in a double boiler over medium heat. Remove from the heat, pour in the comfrey water, and mix with a hand or electric mixer until thick and creamy. Stir in the preservative.

Note: This cream needs to be refrigerated and will last for two to three weeks. Only use comfrey externally.
