Preventing Respiratory Infections

It seems that I am not invincible, not that I ever really thought I was.  But over the last few weeks, I’ve developed a sore throat and cough that I just can’t shake.  Fortunately, after a trip to the doctor’s office, I found out that although I do have a respiratory infection, after some antibiotics, cough syrup and Tylenol (mostly for the headaches I give myself coughing), I should be good as new in a few days.

But to help you not get to this point, here are a few tips on how to prevent a respiratory infection from happening:

  • Clean your house thoroughly to get rid of excess dust, mold and pet dander.
  • Stay away from construction sites or wear a mask if you must be there to block dust and harmful pollutants.
  • Avoid smoking and other air pollutants as much as possible.
  • Try to stay away from large crowds during cold and flu season.
  • Wash your hands to kill germs that are easily spread throughout the day.
  • Eat good, healthy foods like fresh fruits and veggies.
  • Get enough sleep so you don’t wear down your body.
  • Drink plenty of water, at least 6-8, eight ounce glasses a day.
  • Do not rub your face or eyes to keep germs away from nasal passages and tear ducts.
  • Try to relax and de-stress.
  • Talk to your doctor about getting a flu shot and pneumonia vaccine, if you have not had one.
