Bring Your Own Water Bottle

There are so many great reasons to go eco-friendly by carrying your own water bottle wherever you go. If you have not begun to “go green” in other areas of your life, a reusable bottle is a great way to start. In fact, Friends of the Earth states that the single most effective act that individuals can do to improve the environment is to stop drinking bottled water. Let’s review the benefits for your new BYOB lifestyle.

Good For Your Health

The first great benefit is for your health. Nearly everyone should drink more water and having your own bottle handy helps you keep adequately hydrated.

Helps the Environment

As mentioned above, drinking tap water is also great for the environment. In more detail, approximately 40 billion plastic bottles are produced annually in the U.S. About two-thirds of them end up in landfills. This can be up to 60 million bottles in a single day. More energy and materials are wasted in packaging and transporting these bottles as well.

Saves You Money

In this economy, drinking tap water saves you money. Kick the fancy French, Italian, or Fijian water to the curb and drink what you have right at home. Most tap water is just as good, and more closely monitored for health and safety, than bottled water. If you have any concerns about impurities, you can always filter your water first. Even with the cost of a filter (changed every 1-3 months) good old tap water is going to save significant money.

Now it’s time to consider what type of reusable bottle you might like to try. These days there are quite a few options to choose from. Here is a great summary from the Greeniacs website .

Stainless Steel:

Made from the same stainless steel used for food preparation and brewing, these bottles are non-toxic and don’t seep any chemicals into the liquids that they contain. They are lightweight and can be expected to last for years. When they do finally wear out, though, they are 100% recyclable!

Aluminum:

SIGG is the brand famous for the “best water bottle in the world,” according to Backpacker Magazine. Earlier this year, there were some issues with the SIGGS bottle liners manufactured prior to August of 1998. These liners contained traces of BPA. SIGG has created a new liner that passes inspection for safety.

Other Plastics:
High-density polyethylene (HDPE #2), low-density polyethylene (LDPE #4), and polypropylene (#5) are all safer plastic alternatives to polycarbonate (#7). They are softer plastics, so they tend to absorb flavor from non-water beverages, but they are not known to leach toxins. New Wave Enviro even offers a corn resin based plastic bottle with a built-in filter. It is similar to PET, but this version biodegrades in 80 days!
