More Green Halloween Tips: Make Your Own Costumes
A great way to save money and go green for Halloween is to make your own costumes. Coming up with ideas and working on the costumes is also a wonderful family activity for a rainy fall day. This way, your kids won’t end up looking like half the kids who all went to the local costume or discount store. Who needs another Spider Man or Cinderella? Let’s get more creative, save money, and have fun while doing it.
Start at home
Investigate what supplies you already have at home. You may be surprised that you can come up with quite a few costume ideas with supplies you already have. Here are some ideas:
Ghost
An oldie, but a goodie. Who can resist an adorable little white sheet asking for candy? But, get creative and dress up that little ghost a bit. For a girl ghost, you can add eye shadow and lipstick to the sheet. Glue on false eyelashes or draw them. Add earrings and a necklace. Who says a ghost can’t be stylish? For a boy ghost , add a hat and tie.
Scarecrow
Use an old flannel shirt and some blue jeans. Stuff with paper and add strips of shredded paper or felt at the ends to imitate hay (real hay is too scratchy). Tie the cuffs and pants bottoms with string. Pop on a straw hat and a little makeup, and presto! Your little one has been transformed.
Old Man or Lady
Kids love to dress up like adults. Put a boy in an old suit with glasses. Give him a hat and cane. A girl might wear an old dress, perhaps an apron, glasses and a fun hat. You can dust on a pretend grey hair with powder or flour.
A Cloudy Sky or Starry Night
Your child can where all light blue or dark blue clothing. Add cotton balls for clouds, or cutouts and stickers for stars.
